The Battle of Sootopolis as well as the Battle of Mossdeep still linger on Fenelle's mind as dee is on the lookout in this new war zone - actually deployed in battle now, with occasional tasks still telling dem to help with rebuilding destroyed technological infrastructure.

Der Metagross is not deployed for a change - hasn't been in der active team since the first wave of battles that have heralded the beginnings of war. Instead, der Rotom in der smartwatch keeps an eye out, ready to alert with a small vibration, as well as der Bronzong floating nearby. Their psychic link is weak - the Bronzong is only here to feed Fenelle information, not the other way around.

There's a paranoia sinking into Fenelle that dee hasn't had time to process yet, with everything going on.

And now as well, dee focuses outwards, looking at the area with careful eyes.

It doesn't even need all the alarm systems and machinations to find a Leaguer, possibly also looking for trouble.

Their eyes lock as the world stills for a moment.

calla roth had decided that she was done standing on the side lines.[break][break]

though petalburg isn't close to her home, she finds herself wandering route 104, determined to do something other than pace the floor back in her apartment or do all of her paperwork at hq days before it's due.[break][break]

in truth, it feels like kanto all over again. a repeat of a dark chapter in her life that makes her cagey and restless at the idea of repeating it for a second time. but she isn't as young this time around and she isn't going to run away now.[break][break]

what she has is a chip on her shoulder and a whole lotta anger that she doesn't know where to put down. she finds herself here, itching for an ill-advised fight simply because she's looking for that.[break][break]

foolishly trying to prove anything and nothing at once.[break][break]

by her side, her alolan ninetales prowls forward, ears alert and fur on end along the ridge of her spine. furia senses another presence first, but it doesn't take calla long to catch up. she locks onto a pair of ocean blue eyes and for a moment, she only stares at dem.[break][break]

then the spell breaks and tension draws a tine line in her posture like a wire pulled tight.[break][break]

she sucks in a sharp breath, mind skittering before it all goes silent. this is what she's been looking for - the hesitation in her actions dies with the snap of her fingers. the only wordless command her pokemon knows, and furia heeds it instantly. she crouches in front of her trainer, maw opening to let loose a SHEER COLD gale-howl that is intent on freezing the opposition in der tracks.[break][break]

she'd rather act first and apologize after if she's made a mistake. no one can fault her for being on guard. (or so she tells herself.)

There's only one moment needed, one moment of lingering hesitation and evaluation, before it's decided. A quick psychic scan that registers the hatred towards Rocket is all dee needs for der hand to go towards der pokéballs - all of them maintained immaculately, though they definitely show signs of usage. Dee frequently switches pokémon depending on the current need.

The quick throw comes in just in time to prevent der Bronzong getting hit from the Sheer Cold, as dee decides to take a gamble as well. Dondozo appears in a flash of red, and partially starts freezing over, but not before it could attempt a counter of his own. With his arrival, he slams into the earth with Fissure to crack open the ground beneath, already creating a rather difficult terrain to start with as ground and ice meet.

"Not even a greeting," an electronic voice sounds over the deafening impact, coming from Fenelle's wrist watch and the Rotom within - perhaps an attempt at stoking up the fire, setting anger ablaze to burn rationality and make way for mistakes. Perhaps also a test to figure out more about that sudden opponent, as der hand already holds the next pokéball to call for the next combatant.

Der Bronzong tells dem all there is to know about the Dondozo, as it's swiftly switched out for a Hisuian Goodra who opens up with a fierce Mud Shot.

Furia yelps as the ground cracks in a rapidly traveling split under the Alolan ninetale’s paws. The fissure makes her jump back, but one paw catches in the crumbling earth and twists painfully. Even so, she is not one to back down from a battle. Her maw loosens again to reveal sharp teeth. Ice coagulates on her fangs as the cool swirl of an ice beam fires in the direction of her attacker.[break][break]
Calla grits her teeth, nose wrinkling in snarling distaste that mirrors the vulpine sharpness of her companion. Another pokeball is unclipped from her belt, and it rolls into her hand, though she doesn’t immediately send a second party out. Each of them sit in a neat line—shiny and far from scratched or battered. An obvious tell that Calla is green behind the ears.[break][break]
Not that this stops her from pressing forward against her discovered opponent.[break][break]
Her violet eyes scan the rocket across from her—from their reaction, her assumption seems to have been correct. There is a sense of validation that comes from trusting her gut.[break][break]
The cadence of the electronic voice hums in the air and Calla frowns. “Why should I waste my breath on hellos? We both know why we’re here.”
The large dondozo vanishes and as Furia backsteps to her side, Cal hurls the ball in her hand forward. In a burst of light, her shiny mawile’s large jaws swing as the pokemon twists toward der goodra. The appendage unhinges wide and snaps against the muddied attack—earning her a mouthful of watery, slimy silt and grit.[break][break]
“Now do me a favor and lose.” Vesper hisses her agreement and the mawile lunges forward toward the soft-looking dragon with sharp teeth. Intent on playing rough with it.[break][break]
It’s bold talk for someone who has fought so little. But Calla has never been anything short of pugnacious and headstrong.

It doesn't escape Fenelle how the other's pokéballs look barely used - a green one, if the battling hasn't already been a giveaway. Still, Fenelle reminds demself not to let down der guard too much - aggressive enemies are both easier and more difficult to handle. Their lack of predictability is a thin line to balance, though they are also prone to mistakes ... let's see if there's even any need for riling up.

At Calla's reply, dee smirks slightly - the words transcribed via electric morse codes as dee taps out a reply in turn. Not using signs - perhaps using telepathy, perhaps being that robotic entity or a velontroquist in the weirdest fashion. "That's why I don't,", dee remarks about losing breath. Her guts are both something dee can appreciate, while dee also doesn't intend to lose either. An odd kind of respect that both acknowledges the other's possible capabilities and the danger they represent, as well as considering demself superior still in an almost belittling fashion.

The second remark is met with silence as dee instead decides to take the Hisuian Goodra up a notch.

The Mawile's Maw is met partially with the hardened shell of the Hisuian Goodra, steel that meets steel, as it takes the attack in anticipation. Pretending to be unfazed as he takes it, the steel shell reverberating. Terastal energy then hums in the air as the steel dragon pushes the fairy off - but not far - and terastallizes, an earthen crown appearing on its hand in an, admittedly, flashy light show. Immediately upon completing this transformation, he goes for another Mud Shot - this time fired up.

“Then we agree on something,” she retorts, then scoffs. “Astonishingly.” Calla doesn’t waste time on things like considering why a Rocket is a part of the organization. Or now dey don’t look all that much younger than herself. It’s black and white in her mind–someone is on her side, or they aren’t. And all she cares about is making sure that she doesn’t lose to dem.[break][break]
If she can be considered a threat to this person, then maybe she’s actually getting somewhere.[break][break]
Not that her mawile noshing on the pure steel of the goodra’s hardened shell really cuts an intimidating impression. She grits her own teeth as Vesper reels, jaws shaking as the pain reverberates through the appendage. The sparkle of terastralization overtakes the dragon, and something inside of Calla seethes at the sudden disadvantage.[break][break]
This is where another, formidable trainer might mirror the upping of the stakes. But she doesn’t have a tera orb. Or a dyna band, or keystone, or anything that might elevate her poor mawile against the now-ground type.[break][break]
She doesn’t have anything.[break][break]
Or wait. Maybe she does have something. Calla’s brows furrow for a split second, the only trace of hesitation through the red veil of her aggression. She hasn’t exactly worked with this pokemon, and working in League HQ, she knows the risks in sending one out that hasn’t been properly regulated.[break][break]
Either way, she had better think fast. Still, reeling over the toothache, her mawile stumbles back–turning back toward the goodra only to be blasted back by the second mud shot. The jet of watery sludge smacks into her head-on and sends her sprawling.[break][break]
Despite her hesitancy, or maybe in spite of it, Callas’ fingers slide over the pokeball anyway, and the voice in her head that says no weakness, no mercy pushes her forward. Dey are not deserving of her pity or any more of her time.[break][break]
She intends to push forward toward Petalburg, whether dey like it or not.[break][break]
In a fluid motion that surprises even herself, the pokeball snaps open in time with the recollection of her spent mawile disappearing into her own ball. “Take it down,” she hisses at the type:null that barrels free, the axe-piece embedded in its head swinging wildly. Free of confinement, it rages forward and that chaotic, wild feeling hums in Calla too.[break][break]
Her mouth splits in a grin, and she finds herself stepping forward, closer to the fight itself as her eyes look beyond the clash of the type:null attempting to drive its IRON HEAD into the soft belly of the hisuian goodra, toward her own opponent with der clever moves and cheeky, electronic quips.

Fenelle only gives a single nod at the Leaguer's words, preparing fully for a terastallization to happen - fire with fire, and everything. Or maybe a mega evolution or anything ... but there's simply the Mawile, getting blasted by the second, more powerful Mud Shot. There's a smirk on Fenelle's face, a shit-eating grin to fuel the fire more.

However, it also dies.

How the fuck did a greenhorn like that get a Type:Null?!

It's a beast that dee would also like to have on der team - even if there's a good chance dee will never utilise its full potential because friendship is a hard thing to do. But not impossible, either, as dee learns in the company of Makoto Kurumi ... a feeling of comfort that dee can't fall back to in this very moment, however, as the Type:Null's Iron Head splits right through the crystalline coating of the Hisuian Goodra, sending it back to Fenelle in a flash.

"Upping the stakes, huh," an electric voice murmurs in Fenelle's stead, as Fenelle puts out der next fighter. If it comes to this, there's only one match-up in der current team that wouldn't instantly go down - and it's perhaps also perfect for what dee intends to do, even if in the other extreme. Riling up and clowning as a court jester enters the stage, though it's not in any way less dangerous because of its silly appearance.

The orb devoid of expression, with a lanky body to make up for all the mockery. Its first order is Calm Mind, boosting its own stats as it moves to take off its head - perhaps to bow, before tossing it high into the air.

Fenelle doesn't expect it to stay long - but that damage should be a significant help later on.

Something smug sinks in under Calla’s skin as the Type:null makes easy work of der hisuian goodra. Maybe she can actually do this. She’ll claw her way through all of her opposition if It means she makes something of herself.[break][break]
“Duh. Obviously.” Her hair flicks back over her shoulder as Calla lurches forward and sweeps it out of the way. Her mouth curls in a toothy grin though her brows are still pinched together in concentration. In a weird show of ferality that makes her look more like she’s grimacing. But there is something thrilling in the turning tables.[break][break]
Until there isn’t.[break][break]
She watches the blacephalon emerge, round head rocketing up into the air. She hates these things. Between the guzzlord and these jesters in the ultra space city, she’d been unable to have an actually useful trek there. Then again, she probably should never have been there to begin with.[break][break]
But it doesn’t matter, because the type:null will make quick work of it.[break][break]
Confidence swells where it has no right to. “Take it out with Tri Attack!” She commands the beast, but no multi-colored beam forms at the helm of its masked head to inhibit the ultra beast. Calla’s anger stokes, and under that…there’s a flurry of panic. “Tri Attack!”[break][break]
For a fleeting second, her assuredness returns as the type:null swings the blade of its head down and turns toward the headless blacephalon. Her broad smile returns, and she looks across the space at the Rocket triumphantly.[break][break]
But then it charges.[break][break]
The smile slides off of her face as it barrels full tilt toward its opponent. Risking it all for the biscuit with an ensuing double-edge.[break][break]
“No!” she howls the word, but there’s no stopping it. Her gamble was an ill-advised one—who does she really think she is, trying to command a wild beast like that? It happens so quickly, the detached head of the ultra beast hasn’t returned to its body yet.

There's a moment of fear upon seeing the fearsome beast - not even fully realising its potential yet, simply a being barely tied together with string and instinct. It makes dem ponder for a sliver of a moment if the tables of the fight might turn for the worse, as it forces Fenelle to bring out a hand quickly that dee hasn't wanted to use just yet. But it's the only way to take it out, if there's any chance for it at all.

A bomb is ticking. First to strengthen itself, then ... a necessary sacrifice.

Tick, tick, tick ... A noise that Fenelle can't hear but counts down as dee reads the attack that should come - an adjustment is needed for the bomb not to go off yet, be caught and thrown, until ... Panic. The clear signs of being in over her head, as the Leaguer calls for something the Type:Null doesn't listen to.

Another reason to throw your loyalties with the right lot - dee has no idea how the other got a Type:Null, but dee doubts that Rocket would allow things beyond control to get into the wrong hands. It's so easy to wrestle it out of incapable hands, after all, though that's not something Fenelle is after. Instead, dee watches as the bomb falls, the Double-Edge connects.

Mind Blown.

An explosion that rends the Blacephalon asunder in combination with the Double-Edge, though dee has no idea if the other would survive the impact ... it's a mighty foe, and if it's not down now- it needs to go soon. Tossing der pokéball with der ace, dee also taps the Mega-band on der wrist to call for Mega-Grimmsnarl who immediately lunges for a Spirit Break - perhaps also letting it stray, attempt to inflict further panic in the trainer as well as the sparkling pink turns dark and ominous - a reflection of blood and flesh.

With a thought, a Bronzong appears on the battlefield in the Blacephalon's wake, and before the psychic link is cut, dee calls for one last command, Gravity. The heaviness of the situation bears down on dem as dee gives up a psychic awareness of der surroundings.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, Calla knows that sending out the type:null was a mistake. That she is not weathered enough despite her trips to different ultra worlds. Despite getting her hands on the amalgamation of a creature in the first place. It is too much in its wildness. And perhaps she is too much too.[break][break]
She’s too angry, she’s too weak.[break][break]
She’s not the person she thought she would be when she was a little girl. She’s not the person she thought she would be when she was a teenager watching Kanto go up in flames around her–forced to flee what little home she’d had.[break][break]
But when she was no more than a weedy, whipsmart girl, she’d been tougher. The need to keep her twin brother safe and happy had demanded it. At one time, there had been a reason the bigger kids in their neighborhood didn’t want to see her around. She hadn’t been afraid of them, or intimidated.[break][break]
She tells herself not to be intimidated by this Rocket or her type:null’s failure to do as she says now. Somewhere, buried under the shambles that her life has become, that girl tries to claw her way to the surface again. She tries to yell for the type:null to yield again as it charges the ultra beast, but it’s futile. They collide, and it detonates.[break][break]
The impact of the blachephalon’s mind blown is immediate. She barely has the time to twist and shield herself from the brightness of the implosion before she tumbles. As the smoke clears, Calla rolls to her feet, wiping dirt from her face. She expects to see the type:null mangled, or maybe in pieces.[break][break]
But it’s tougher than she gives it credit for. She’s tougher than she looks. That doesn’t mean it’s in any fit condition to fight for much longer, though, and her list of options is running down. The realization intensifies as the smoke clears and she’s met with the site of a mega-evolving grimmsnarl and the ever present bronzong.[break][break]
Mega evolution. Yet another tool she lacks.[break][break]
Calla staggers under the weight of gravity as the air becomes leaden around them. An annoyed sound rises in the back of her throat as violet eyes pin on her opposite. It’s akin to a growl.[break][break]
But as she struggles, so too does the Type:null in its attempt to rise back up on clawed feet again. It forces its head up and finally uses the move Calla had requested of it in the first place–the multi-colored glow of a TRI ATTACK aims itself at the grimmsnarl, if only to keep it back.[break][break]
“You sure lean on all these extra gimmicks a lot, dont’cha?” Calla leers at dem. Though if she were being honest, so would she. It doesn’t stop her from bluffing, however. She takes a shake step forward. If she can’t unnerve dem in battle, she will do so with her fists instead.

Blacephalon goes out in a bang that Fenelle only sees, and even then dee closes der eyes to avoid being blinded by the flame shooting upwards at the sky. Still, the battle's not over just yet, dee sees ... Maybe another point to give the Leaguer credit for, even if dee doubts that the Type:Null's resilience has anything to do with the white-haired. Or maybe it does, in that bond that dee only slowly starts to unravel further ...

Either way, they're still a threat that needs to be disposed of. Calculating through several scenarios, dee ponders for a moment while der pokémon act on their own. The Mega-Grimmsnarl moves to dodge, while the Bronzong moves to interfere the Tri-Attack, tanking it for the dark fairy and vanishing - it doesn't calculate often, but it's come to the same conclusion as Fenelle.

Once Grimmsnarl's gone, it's curtains.

"Tends to make the fights' lot faster," Fenelle replies to the leer with a nonchalant shrug - aiming to stir even more.

However, with the psychic gone, the Gravity lifts from the place as well - something the Grimmsnarl has anticipated given their training together, as he immediately uses this moment to strike with another Spirit Break. But there's something that dee hasn't paid much importance to, but now ... movements are way faster with the pressure of high gravity gone.

Is that ... is that Leaguer moving towards me? Dee takes a step back, now fully focusing on the white-haired. Flickers of uncertainty break through the nonchalance - what does the other have in mind?!

There is absolutely no way type:Jill will hold up against that grimmsnarl. Especially not when the bronzing tanks the hit instead—leaving the goblin at full vitality. The battle seems to be lost, but the war? That, she thinks, has just begun.[break][break]
It doesn’t matter, though.[break][break]
All at once, the gravity lifts and Calla’s stride stumbles. She’s quick to catch herself, though, and rights her balance mid stride. Then she’s launching herself forward with renewed motivation, a grimacing smirk stretching across her mouth as her lungs burn and her sights lock on dem with target precision.[break][break]
In her periphery, she knows that the rising type:null is going down again just as quickly. It is subdued by the spirit break, unconscious body flashing back to its ball.[break][break]
But her motive has shifted trajectory—amplified as she sees dem take a backward step with confused, uncertain footing. Good.[break][break]
If the battle is going to reach a dissatisfying conclusion, then she can have this instead.[break][break]
Calla Roth is not a disciplined or practiced fighter. All of her skills, rusty for sure, rest in playground tactics. Kicking and spitting and clawing and battering with fists far less coordinated than any trained boxer’s.[break][break]
“Not so tough now, huh?” She yells the question with the sort of taunting menace of a child pushing back. Defiant and half wild with delight as she lunges at dem with the intent of grappling dem to the ground for a sound smackdown.[break][break]
In hindsight, maybe she should’ve led with this.

The Type:Null goes down, which should be a good sign. However, Fenelle can't really focus on that victory with the Leaguer having something else in mind, apparently. Dee doesn't even bother hiding the shock and confusion because ...

What the fuck, Leaguer? What the fuck?

Even Grimmsnarl, reverting to his original form, seems to be a bit too perplexed to step in, which normally would be reason for a scolding, but here? Dee kind of gets it as dee starts booking it a heartbeat too late.

There's a body on dem, before Grimmsnarl could finally intervene, but there's a punch that landed. Still dazed for a moment as Grimmsnarl keeps the Leaguer away for one moment, before she'd break away again. But once that moment passes, it's definitely time to run.

At least that's something dee could do rather well, even if Grimmsnarl couldn't keep up with dem running and disappears into his ball again. "WHAT THE FUCK??" the Rotom voice wails without der continued input, simply correctly predicting Fenelle's thoughts in this moment.

Run, run, run - that Leaguer has lost it.

Dee technically won the pokémon battle, but how come the winner is the one being chased now-?!

She’s not thinking with a clear mind. The punches she tries to land on the Rocket are uncoordinated and flailing. More like slamming her fists down and hoping she makes contact. Like a wild, cornered animal finally lunging out.[break][break]
Her mouth opens, and no words come out. Only guttural sound. War cry.[break][braek]
Dey are trying to twist away and she is still on dem. She can feel her knuckles make contact against soft skin. Her nails grapple at der clothes—an infuriated purrloin trying to scratch.[break][break]
And then an outside force snatches her up.[break][break]
She howls at the resistance as her eyes register the Rocket now at short distance from her. She flails and lashes out against the pokemon holding her back, hands scrabbling at the sturdy arm of the grimmsnarl. And much like the unkempt, childhood version of herself would do, her mouth opens and she bites down on that arm so that it will let her go.[break][break]
WHAT THE FUCK?[break][break]
A laugh slips out at der obvious horror. “Yeah,” she spits out as she continues to struggle, “expecting some uptight, law abiding citizen who only plays by the rules? Ha!”[break][break]
This is what people expect of her. They think because she is formal and stiff and icy, that she is bound by an unwavering code of ethics. That she walks around with a perpetual stick up her ass. She lets them think so. It’s partially true.[break][break]
Just not the stalwart morality part.[break][break]
This is who she is under the surface. It is nice dey finally see beyond her obvious inexperience to what lurks underneath. It is empowering.[break][break]
“YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT!” She screeches as they hightail it. The grimmsnarl releases her to follow, disappearing in a flash. Calla takes off after dem, but her lungs burn from her first sprint, and from the unhinged screeching. Her steps slow to a stop. “YOU BETTER RUN!”[break][break]
Her teeth are bared, fire lit in violet eyes as her chest heaves with loud breaths.[break][break]
She stares after dem for a long time. Even after dey vanish from immediate view.[break][break]
Then, composing herself, Calla flips the long strands of her hair over her shoulders, straightens her clothing, and assesses the situation before pulling out a radio to report the situation. The wild-eyed girl is gone, replaced by cold formality.[break][break]
But it’s still there, hidden away—the thrill.
